Tavoite

Hankkeen tavoitteena on kehittää innovatiivisia, mukautuvia ja kestäviä menetelmiä hyödyntää ja uusiokäyttää käyttämättömiä tai vähäisellä käytöllä olevia rakennuksia Pohjois-Ruotsin ja Pohjois-Suomen syrjäisillä ja harvaanasutuilla alueilla.

Hankkeessa tutkitaan, kuinka sosiaalisesti ja kulttuurihistoriallisesti arvokkaitakin mutta nykyisellään hyödyntämättömiä rakennuksia voidaan uudelleenkäyttää luovalla ja älykkäällä tavalla esimerkiksi matkailussa, väliaikaisasuntoina, taiteilijaresidensseinä, etä- tai yhteiskäyttötyötiloina tai kulttuuritiloina esimerkiksi näyttely- tai tapahtumatoiminnalle.

Pienten paikallisyhteisöjen on nykyisellään haastavaa tarjota asukkailleen monipuolisia kulttuurisia, sosiaalisia, koulutuksellisia palveluja. Tilojen uudelleen käyttöönotto voi edesauttaa paikallisyhteisöjen sosiaalisen ja kulttuurisen infrastruktuurin aktivoitumista.

The aim of the project is to develop innovative tools and methods for the sustainable and flexible reuse of historic and existing buildings in the northern regions of Sweden and Finland, turning what is nowadays a burden into a possibility.

We will create opportunities for municipalities and homeowners by showing how unused or underused buildings with social and cultural values in peripheral areas can be re-used in a creative and smart way, e.g. as BnBs, temporary houses, artist residencies, smart- remote- and co-working spaces, and sites for exhibitions, events, and other cultural activities. This will enhance and promote the attractiveness of peripheral areas as places to live and work.

We will jointly support good preservation of the buildings, promote sustainable tourism in the Northern region and contribute to the socio-cultural life of Northern peripheries and rural and sparsely populated areas. We will build a cross-border network to keep exchanging ideas and best practices.

Tulokset

Projektin tuloksena syntyy rajat ylittävä verkosto toimijoille, jotka kamppailevat käyttämättömien tai liian vähällä käytöllä olevien rakennusten kanssa. Verkoston kautta kohderyhmä voi vaihtaa kokemuksia, keskustella haasteista ja kehittää kestäviä ratkaisuja. Verkoston edistää yhteistyötä ja inspiroi uusiin ideoihin.

Tuloksena kehitetään liiketoimintamalleja eri kohderyhmille/ toimijoille, jotka haluavat kehittää vetovoimaisia ja saavutettavia tapoja hyödyntää käyttämättömiä rakennuksia. Mallit kehitetään käytännön työllä ja kokeiluilla yhteistyössä kohderyhmien kanssa. Mallit dokumentoidaan sähköiseksi työkirjaksi niin, että ne ovat sovellettavissa ja hyödynnettävissä muillekin sidosryhmille, jotka ovat läpikäymässä samanakaltaisia rakennusten kehittämisprosesseja.

Niin ikään tuloksena syntyy alusta, jonka kautta tietoa, hyviä käytäntöjä ja malleja kerätään projektin aikana. Alusta palvelee tulevaisuudessa kehittämisen ja uusien aloitteiden pohjana. Yksi hankepartnereista, Northern Sustainable Futures, on sitoutunut kehittämään ja ylläpitämään alustaa projektin päättymisen jälkeenkin.

The project will jointly support good preservation of the buildings, will promote sustainable tourism in the Northern region and will contribute to the socio-cultural life of Northern peripheries and rural and sparsely populated areas.  

As a result of the project, we launch business models for different actors and target groups who want to create attractive and accessible ways to utilize their unused or underused buildings. The project will also result in an IT platform that will serve as an active marketplace that streamlines connections between project results, end-users, and target groups. This operational tool will facilitate not only knowledge sharing but also the re-activation and restoration of unused buildings, exploring cutting-edge technologies. 

The project will ensure that the results remain a valuable resource for a sustainable future of the  northern regions by securing their ownership, durability, and transferability and by establishing a solid foundation for the continued growth and success of the region. 

Tulosten hyödynnettävyys

Peripheral and sparsely populated areas in the Northern parts of Sweden and Finland share similar problems and challenges regarding the use and maintenance of their built environments and the attractiveness of their smaller settlements to short-term and long-term residents. Cross-border activities encourage cultural exchange between different regions and countries which leads to a more diverse and enriched cultural environment, as well as fostering mutual understanding and cooperation. Bringing together communities from different regions promotes social cohesion and gives a stronger sense of belonging and pride and thus increases the attractiveness of the area. We will explore how unused or underused buildings with social and cultural values in peripheral areas in Northern Sweden and Finland can be re-used in a creative and smart way, for instance as BnBs, temporary houses, artist residencies, smart- remote- and co-working spaces, and sites for exhibitions, events, and other cultural activities. These activities can also contribute to re-activate the social and cultural infrastructure of small communities in these areas, which nowadays struggle to offer diverse cultural, social and educational services to their inhabitants.
