Students have the right to complete their studies up to one year longer than the target completion time. A student in a bachelor’s degree program whose target study right period is nearing its end must contact their academic advisor to update their personal study plan (HOPS). After updating the HOPS, the student can register for the academic year in the system during the registration period.

The university of applied sciences may grant discretionary additional time to a student who has not graduated within their study right period (see Discretionary Additional Time for Study Rights).

A student continuing their studies must register as present or absent each academic year in the manner specified by the university of applied sciences (932/2014, § 29). Registration is done for one academic year at a time (August 1 – July 31). If the study right ends in December, registration can only be done for the autumn semester. A student registered as present is required to pay the health care fee (YTHS). The health care fee does not need to be paid if another EU or EEA country, Switzerland, or the UK is responsible for your social security. Even if you are not required to pay the health care fee, you can still use YTHS services.

A student continuing their studies registers as present or absent in the system between April 15 and August 31. The student can change their registration details during the registration period (April 15 – August 31 for the autumn and spring semesters, and November 15 – January 6 for the spring semester). A student will lose their study rights if they do not register for the academic year by the deadline (see Reinstatement of Study Rights).

A student has the right to complete studies, receive credits in the study register, and receive study-related guidance only as a registered present student. Registration as present is also required during student exchange, internships, and thesis work.

If you have any issues with registration, please contact student.registry@lapinamk.fi.

According to the Universities of Applied Sciences Act (932/2014), a first-year student can only register as absent for an academic year for the following reasons:

1) is performing service under the Conscription Act (1438/2007), the Civilian Service Act (1446/2007) or the Voluntary Military Service for Women Act (194/1995);

2) is on maternity, paternity or parental leave; or

3) is unable to start his/her studies due to his/her own illness or disability.

You can register as absent using Lapland UAS Oili service, but you must prove the legal reason for your absence. The documents proving the legal excuse for the absence must be submitted by encrypted e-mail. The documents must be submitted within 2 weeks of the date of notification of the student’s place of residence, by which time the documents sent by post must also have arrived.

If the statutory reason for absence falls only in one semester (e.g. military service starting in January or maternity leave), you can register as absent for the whole academic year if you wish. You can also change your attendance registration for the spring semester to an absence registration during the registration period for the spring semester.

If you register as absent in the first year of your studies but do not provide a satisfactory explanation of the reason for your absence by the deadline set by the university, you will lose your right to study. If you want to start your studies at a later date, you must apply to the university for re-admission. You do not have to take part in the student selection procedure to regain your right to study.

If you have accepted a place of study after 1 August 2015 and are registered as a student for the first academic year, you have the right to register as absent for one academic year (two semesters) for any reason at the end of your studies.

What does non-attendance mean?

Students who are non-attending cannot attend classes or examinations organised by the UAS, take part in internships, receive supervision for their thesis or other learning tasks.

As an non-attending student, you must ensure that you register for the following year in accordance with the timetable. Please note that the delivery and content of your training may vary from year to year. Please also note that the course for which you have been selected may only start once a year. When you return to continue your studies after your absence, please check your personal study plan (HOPS) and follow any changes to the study plan in force at the time.

If your password has expired during your absence, please change it.

A student who has not completed his/her studies within the study right period (target period + 1 year) loses his/her right to study, unless the UAS grants him/her a discretionary extension to complete his/her studies.

An application for an extension must be submitted at least two months before the end of the study period. The student must include a plan for completing the studies and pay a processing fee of 50 € at the time of filing the application (A1440/2014§3).

The application is completed in Peppi on the Student’s Desktop. The student will be informed of the decision by e-mail.
