Europe Business Assembly (EBA) has recognised Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences with the Best Regional Universities award. Awards were given in four categories; KTUAS received an award in the Science and Education category.

Reijo Tolppi, the former rector of KTUAS and current vice-rector of Lapland University of Applied Sciences, went to the Oxford Town Hall to receive the award on 17 December.

The decision to grant the award was made by The Socrates Committee. The award cannot be applied for, and the committee does not accept recommendations for the award. Reijo Tolppi had no information about how the committee had learned about Kemi-Tornio UAS. However, at the Oxford event, Director General of EBA John Netting had told Reijo Tolppi that in particular, the award was granted for the development of distance studies and e-learning.

Lapland UAS may use the recognition granted to Kemi-Tornio UAS in its marketing for the next five years.

Universities from around the world were awarded, however the majority of them were Commonwealth nations. No other Finnish universities or institutes of higher education received an award.

At the same function, KTAUS’s former rector Reijo Tolppi received a Manager of the Year medal.

The use of Information and communication technology for teaching has been developed systematically at the University of Applied Sciences for over ten years. As early as 2006 Kemi-Tornio UAS received a UNESCO award in recognition of its development of e-learning.
