Lapland UAS guidelines for the responsible use of AI in illustrations

  • The creator or commissioner of generative AI is responsible for the content of the images.
  • Be aware that the use of AI-generated images may provoke strong reactions or criticism. It is therefore important to carefully consider the purpose of the image already at the planning stage.
  • AI-generated images must not be used to mislead, and their use must be transparent. Good practices and appropriate procedures must be followed. Consider what kind of audience will see the content.
  • Please take copyright into account! Using generative AI does not guarantee copyright protection for the image or video it creates. Merely writing a prompt does not meet the threshold of originality required for copyright protection. An AI-generated image may be used under a usage right, similar to stock images in general. Images may be used for communication and marketing purposes.
  • Please note: generative AI may have been used to create images from external stock image services, such as Adobe Stock (Picture 1). Remember to credit the image source in this case as well.
Some Adobe Stock images have been created using generative AI. This is indicated in connection with the image.

How can generative AI be used, and where can it be used?

Illustrations created with AI must support the content and be appropriate for the intended purpose.

AI-generated images must be created in a way that supports the university’s brand and visual identity. Please therefore also take your university’s graphic guidelines into account when using AI-generated images and videos.

Please note:

Images used in public distribution must also meet a certain level of quality. For example, they should not contain errors generated by AI. If you are unsure about the quality of an image, consult your university’s visual designer.

Accessibility requirements also apply to videos and images produced with AI.

Where are AI-generated images or videos not suitable?

Images must not be misleading. When marketing studies and presenting the university, use real images and videos of real situations, real places, and real people.

Never edit the body or features of real people without their written permission.

Do not create deepfakes. A deepfake is a video forgery containing image, video, or audio that appears authentic and imitates a real person.

Common errors made by generative AI

  • Anatomy is distorted: for example, joints, bends, proportions, and the incorrect placement of limbs. Also pay attention to whether animals and people have the correct number of fingers, eyes, and heads.
  • Unnatural expressions and features in people and animals: wax-like appearance, eyes pointing in different directions, or all people in the image having identical features.
  • The content is misleading: for example, a Lapland landscape contains Alpine mountains.
  • Text content becomes garbled or is not in any real language.
  • The architecture of buildings or natural landscapes defies the laws of nature: floating parts of buildings, or trees that are gigantic in relation to other elements.

How should the use of AI be indicated?

If something more significant than a minor detail has been added to or removed from an image, the use of AI should be indicated in the caption or accompanying text. Use your own judgement and consult visual designers if necessary.

Indicate the use of AI in the accompanying text or caption of the image. If you cannot indicate the use of AI in the image and the image could be misleading without this information, reconsider whether the AI-generated image can be used.

For example, indicate the use as follows:

Generative AI has been used in the creation of this image.
Kuva: Kuvan tekijän nimi

Please also note:

  • The name of the AI application does not have to be mentioned unless it is relevant to the content.
  • When saving the image, add an AI mention and the creator’s name to the file name. For example: PinkCatImage_AI_MaijaMeikalainen.jpg.
  • Also indicate the use of AI in the image alt text.

If you publish an image or video on social media, take into account the channel’s own rules and practices:

Adobe Firefly

With Adobe’s browser-based Adobe Firefly -application (in Finnish) images can be created and edited using simple text prompts.

Adobe Firefly is included in the university’s Adobe licence, so there are no separate fees for using the application. Students can order an Adobe home-use licence using the Adobe Home use license – LUC Portal form. Adobe takes copyright, data protection, and information security practices into account in its operations.
